Google Update:
Google’s Latest Slap
Every now and again Google look at the importance they attach to certain domains. Squido is no longer as important, It’s still a good place to support your main site. Now days it takes longer to get a high position and it’s unlikely you’ll hit the top spot. That was one of Google’s algo changes. The latest area of their attention is the social network scene. Although social book marking is still a good source of links and still effective, it no longer as powerful. Like all good things a few irresponsible people just go too far. The net effect is Google have to take action to protect the integrity of their search results.
That’s what we see happening now. The answer is to make sure you have links from a good mix of websites. Directory submissions, videos, social bookmarks and hub pages are all good. The best source of strong back links is still other peoples related websites. Exchanging links is one of the best ways to tell any search engine how important your own website is. A good way to maximise theses links is to host a couple of good blogs. That way you can still build one way links whilst offering a fair exchange. While you’re at it don’t over look Google’s local search or Google base and remember Rss feed and podcasts. If you don’t put all your eggs in one basket, you’ll weather the storm.
How important is Dmoz?
So just how important is Dmoz these days? after all it's rumoured to be up for sale. The Best of The Web directory is said to be in negotiations. Google themselve have updated their advice regarding an entry. I would appear on the face of it that it's influence is begining to drop.
That said it still forms the basis of most of the main search enginge directories and is currently still very much independent. Ok I'll admit I don't know any one that uses it to search but that isn't the point. Dmoz is still the benchmark of how good your site looks to Google and Yahoo. Therefore it is still an important tool for all webmasters.
The issue most of us have is the time it can take to get a listing and the fact they don't enter into any dialogue. what you have to remember is that it's edited by real people and they are all giving their time free. Add tha fact the just about everyone and his dog submits a website to them too. No wonder it takes an age! In my opinion Dmoz is still top of my list for a directory listing and will be for a long while yet. It must be one of the most powerful and highly regarded links a site can have.
How important is Dmoz? Very, very important.
Social bookmarking, what's going on!
Until very recently social bookmarking was a powerful and fast way to build links. that was of course until Google decided it was being abused. although I still see it as a good tool it just doesn't have the effect it did. That's ok as long as it just one part of your online strategy, but some are getting burned already. By all means use the big bookmarking service and take advantage of the traffic. Just don't expect Google to reward you with top spot.
Having a strategic plan that uses a variety of linking and pormotion method will pay dividends over time. when Google or Yahoo move the goal post, which is often, you can survive and prosper. Don't fall into the trap of riding the gold rush. Always be mindful that time will tell and you need to be secure for the future too.
Is SEO a dying business?
In the eye of many search engine observers it is. The major players are looking deeper into the needs of their customers and doing a lot more to provide good results. The upshot is the it is becoming very dificult to second guess the trends. Things are moving quickly and changing too. There are now more results in Google and Yahoo form video, news and blogs. these results are dynamic and change very quickly. So optimisation is more about quality that ever before. There will always be a need to SEO in some form but the days of big corperations spending hundreds of thousands are coming to an end. They just won't get the ROI any more.

Increase website traffic with free website links, improve search engine rankings, and page rank.
